SUMMARY:Getting Started with the Router and Router Table (October 2026)
DESCRIPTION:The router is an amazingly flexible tool that can be a little scary with its exposed “sharp spinnie thing.” We will demonstrate how to safely use handheld and table mounted routers for joinery\, shaping edges\, flattening boards\, and more using several commercial and off-the-shelf jigs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis discussion-and-demonstration class includes hands-on time with the handheld router and router table. It pairs well with the cutting board with juice groove or the shaped charcuterie board classes\, or as a private workshop focused on a personal project. \n\n\n\nNote: This class has a minimum age of 15. \n\n\n\nMaterials\n\n\n\n\nMaterials are Included\n\n\n\n\nLevel\n\n\n\n\nBeginner/intermediate\n\n\n\n\nCapacity\n\n\n\n\nMaximum of 6 participants (Minimum 3)\n\n\n\n\nClass includes access to the makerspace the rest of the day for students who wish to practice or work on a personal project.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Woodturning (October 2026)
DESCRIPTION:Come enjoy a taste of woodturning.  Learn how quick\, easy and relaxing it can be to carve wood into a wide variety of shapes. No prior woodturning (or even woodworking) experience is required. An instructor\, all tools\, materials and safety equipment are provided. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClass size is small for lots of one on one instruction. You’ll learn that woodturning has more in common with driving a car or shaving than with carving wood with a jack knife.  Many beginner students even comment about having unexpected\, meditative moments when wood seems to just flow off the turning tool. If you like the experience\, longer class are available  where you can make a functional item. \n\n\n\nThis class also provides members and day pass users with certification to use the lathes at Mill Forge Makerspace.

SUMMARY:Build a Cajón
DESCRIPTION:Build a cajón – a simple wooden instrument with the versatility of a drum kit! Originally from South America\, particularly Perú\, and derived from African wooden drums\, the cajón has found its way into flamenco\, rumba\, folk\, blues\, jazz\, and other musical traditions. It is a fairly simple design and easily portable. \n\n\n\nCajóns can be as simple as a box with a thin “tapa” face for striking\, or can be customized with snares or strings\, adjustable sound holes\, feet\, pedals or levers\, decor\, and more. \n\n\n\nThis image was originally posted to Flickr by Dave Catchpole at https://www.flickr.com/photos/52957117@N04/5990865523. cc-by-2.0 via wikimedia.org\n\n\n\nClass attendees will cut the basic parts\, assemble the box\, and attach a snare. Attendees should have taken a Mill Forge intro woodworking class or be certified on woodworking equipment. Students with some prior woodworking experience may contact info@millforge.org for other options. \n\n\n\nThis project can take longer than the allotted time\, especially if customizing the design\, applying a finish\, or for less experienced carpenters. If students would like to return to complete the box to their liking after the 4 hour class\, a day pass can be added to the class at a discounted price ($25) when signing up or on the same day as the course. \n\n\n\nA cajón in progress
