SUMMARY:Intro to Woodworking (August 2026)
DESCRIPTION:Introductory course on basic safety and operation of woodworking equipment at Mill Forge Makerspace. This class will cover all operational stationary power equipment in the woodworking area\, and will provide certification for solo use by Mill Forge Makerspace members. Anticipated coverage will include: \n\n\n\n\nTable Saw\n\n\n\nDrill Press\n\n\n\nJointer\n\n\n\nBandsaw (resaw & figural cutting)\n\n\n\nSanders (belt\, disc\, & spindle)\n\n\n\nPlaner\n\n\n\nMiter Saw\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAttendees will build and take home a pine push tool for power tools and\, time permitting\, will laser engrave it at the end of class. \n\n\n\nAppropriate attire required: \n\n\n\n\nLong hair tied back/up or securely covered (e.g.\, under a well-fitting hat)\n\n\n\nLong pants\n\n\n\nClosed-toe shoes (safety or steel toe recommended but optional)\n\n\n\nNo loose clothing\, jewelry\, or accessories\n\n\n\nEye protection (safety glasses will be provided if needed)

From maple to walnut\, discover their unique grains and characteristics.\n\n\n\nHands-On Construction: Our experienced instructors will guide you step-by-step through the process. Learn how to:\n\nMeasure and cut wood pieces\n\n\n\nEdge and glue them in a straight grain pattern\n\n\n\nSand and finish your cutting board for a smooth surface\n\n\n\n\n\nFinishing Touches: Discover food-safe finishes and oils to protect your cutting board and enhance its natural beauty.\n\n\n\n\nBy the end of the class\, you’ll take home a functional and personalized charcuterie board—a testament to your newfound woodworking skills. Whether you’re a complete beginner or have some experience\, this class is perfect for unleashing your creativity! \n\n\n\nMaterials & Tools:\n\n\n\n\nReduce\, Reuse\, Recycle: This class uses a variety of reclaimed lumber that we are redirecting from the dump or burn pile. This may include Brazilian cherry hard wood flooring; pine\, oak\, poplar\, cherry\, or maple from pallets; boards made from tress from around the neighborhood\, and other woods from old furniture.\n\n\n\n\nSafety & PPE \n\n\n\n\nRespect the shop rules and safety guidelines before using any tools or equipment.\n\n\n\nN95 masks\, safety glasses\, & gloves are provided.\n\n\n\nBe sure to tie up or back long hair.\n\n\n\nWear something you don’t mind getting dirty. The glues\, paints\, and stains we use can permanently stain clothes.\n\n\n\n\nNote: This class has a minimum age of 15.  All those under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Optional training & focused hands-on workshops will be offered as add-ons to this monthly program. \n\n\n\nTry your hand at airbrushing for base coat and terrain!
