3D Printing with Resin – Day 1 (July 2026)

Intermediate course on basic safety and Intermediate-level course on operation of resin 3D printing equipment at Mill Forge Makerspace. Resin printing offers a number of advantages over the more common filament (FDM) 3D printers but presents its own quirks and challenges! This class will cover basic safety and operation of resin 3D printer, selecting and preparing a 3D model for resin printing, detecting and preventing common problems with resin prints, and use of software for model slicing and printer management.

Basic familiarity with FDM (filament) 3D printing or completion of Intro to 3D Printing at Mill Forge is recommended prior to this class.

A minimum of 3 students must be signed up for this class to run. Unless otherwise arranged with Mill Forge staff, the class may be rescheduled if the minimum is not filled by two days prior to the first event.

This course takes place over three two-hour sessions. Please sign up on the listing for the Day 1 session.

1. Day 1: Selecting, supporting, and tuning a 3D model for Resin. Basic Resin printing process & equipment overview.
2. Day 2: Error checking, scaling, and printing a model. Post-processing overview.
3. Day 3: Retrieving, post-processing, and cleanup/prep of resin prints and printers

Anticipated coverage will include:

• Proper personal protective equipment
• Operation of the resin 3D printer
• Basic skills for preparation of resin 3D models for printing
• How to do post processing on a resin 3D print

Attendees will select (or design) print, post-process, and take home a small model. Attendees are encouraged to attend a Minature & Model Painting group (or two, or three!) after the program to learn techniques for finishing their models.

Appropriate attire required:

• Closed-toe shoes
• No loose clothing, jewelry, or accessories
• Long hair tied back/up or securely covered (e.g., under a well-fitting hat)

PPE will be provided, but students may supply their own if available.

• Eye protection (Full seal goggles or face shield)
• Half mask respirator, face shield respirator, or PAPR hood with organic vapor cartridges

Attendees should bring a laptop computer if they are able. A limited number of computers are available for attendees who cannot bring one. The software for the class is supported on Mac, Windows, and Linux. NOTE: Tablets (e.g., iPads) are not able to run all of the necessary software.
