Training Requirements

    1. Read and understand manuals linked below
    2. Receive training from Mill Forge or demonstrate prior experience with substantially similar equipment.
    3. Demonstrate basic skills

Safety warning: Invisible Laser Radiation

  • The CO2 laser emits at 10,600 nm (infrared), which is completely invisible to the human eye.

  • Unlike visible lasers, you cannot see the beam or scattered reflections, making accidental exposure more dangerous.

  • Direct or reflected exposure can cause permanent eye damage or severe skin burns.

  • Wear (gray) CO2 laser goggles provided in the CNC area if watching cutting operation through closed cover. Although cover does block most UV, the manufacturer still recommends eye protection when looking at the platform during operation, especially for extended periods of time

  • The main door sensor is somewhat sensitive. Make sure the door is down firmly prior to operation, and do not move/bump the door while the laser is operating

Fire Hazard

  • Laser cutting is inherently a fire risk—materials can ignite quickly.

  • Never leave the machine unattended while a job is running.

  • Before starting, visually locate the nearest fire extinguisher and fire blanket. There is a CO2 fire extinguisher directly opposite the laser cutter, mounted to the support post. The CO2 fire extinguisher is effective in the enclosed space of the laser cutter while sparing materials and equipment from damage.

Protective Measures

  • Always operate with the enclosure closed and interlocks engaged. Never bypass safety switches.

  • If servicing or aligning the optics with the cover open, use proper 10,600 nm-rated laser safety glasses. It’s generally recommended to use the glasses when operating the laser, even with the cover closed.

  • Be aware that common safety glasses or tinted lenses do not block CO₂ laser radiation. Only lenses specifically rated for this wavelength are effective. Glasses are provided. If you are unable to locate appropriate PPE, please contact staff.

  • Ensure the water chiller, air assist, and exhaust are running before starting any job.

  • Laser-cutting PVC can release chlorine and other toxic fumes that need to be treated and/or exhausted.
